New Teacher Grants
The Alabama Power Service Organization New Teacher Grant Program recognizes outstanding first-year teachers. The grants provide teachers with funds to purchase classroom supplies.
Winning public school teachers are all graduates of state-approved teacher programs located at Alabama's public four-year colleges and universities. The winners receive a $1,000 grant, which they can use to purchase materials and supplies for their classrooms.
The Alabama Power Service Organization has been awarding grants to new teachers since 1995. Candidates for the grants are submitted by the state’s public teacher colleges. A committee that includes education school deans selects the winners.
Supporting education is one of the priorities of Alabama Power. Alabama Power works closely with educators to help children and teachers in the classroom through a variety of initiatives and programs.
How to apply
As part of the New Teacher Grant application process, letters are sent out to Alabama's public four-year colleges and universities that have state-approved teacher education programs. These institutions are asked to recommend up to five candidates. Candidates must be in the top 25 percent of their class academically, possess an aptitude for teaching, and be recommended by education faculty members. Family members of officers or directors of the Alabama Power Service Organization or Alabama Power Company are not eligible for the grant.
