Lake Information
Drought eases across state, but...
Recent rains have helped ease the record-setting drought that has adversely affected Alabama since 2006. The rains, along with concerted efforts by Alabama Power and state and federal agencies to conserve water, have helped bring the company’s reservoirs back to normal or near-normal levels across the system.
Although the precipitation is welcome, weather data show that rainfall amounts remain well below normal. In fact, February 2008 was the first month with normal rainfall since November 2006.
While Alabama Power and other weather observers are encouraged by the increased precipitation, it’s too early to declare that the historic drought is coming to an end. Alabama Power will continue to monitor closely the conditions across the region, and will work with state and federal agencies to carefully coordinate hydro operations in a manner that is sensitive to the needs of both upstream and downstream stakeholders.
For the latest on lake levels, visit Lake Conditions. Or call Alabama Power’s automated Reservoir Information System at 1-800-LAKES11.
