Renew Our Rivers
Renew Our Rivers has grown from a single river cleanup event in Gadsden to a nationally recognized campaign that includes Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and the Florida panhandle, six river systems and brings together more than 10,000 volunteers.
Alabama's rivers are cleaner, thanks to the award-winning Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast's largest organized river-system cleanups.
Evolution
What began as a small community cleanup in 2000 has evolved into a large-scale grassroots statewide project with tens of thousands of volunteers including homeowner and boatowner associations, environmental groups, Alabama Power employees, schools and civic organizations participating.

Recap
Alabama Power, with the help of volunteers around the Southeast, removed more than 10 million pounds of trash from 2000 to 2009 through Renew Our Rivers. The trash and debris removed includes bottles and cans to tires, water heaters, refrigerators and boats. This total encompasses cleanups in Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi.
To participate in a cleanup, simply select a location close to you, contact the organization and show up. Volunteers are welcomed at each river cleanup. Bring friends, family or a community group.
