Safe-T-Opolis Safety Program

Photo

Electricity is an important part of our lives. It's all around us, every day. It makes our lives more comfortable and our jobs easier. In fact, we sometimes take electricity for granted and forget it is a powerful force that deserves our respect, with the potential to cause serious injury and sometimes even death.

We want you to have all the information you need to safely live and work where electricity is present. Our electrical safety program can help you learn more about how to stay safe around electricity.

What is Safe-T-Opolis?

Safe-T-Opolis is a scale model showing overhead wires at a typical home and yard. Normally, energized power lines are away from your daily activities. But sometimes, in work, play or due to severe weather, you may find yourself around them. The Safe-T-Opolis program explains how to stay safe when wires are downed, when you climb near power lines, when kites or fishing line comes into contact with power lines, and other situations.

How much does it cost?
Safe-T-Opolis is free. It is a public service of Alabama Power.

Who Should See Safe-T-Opolis
Everyone can learn from the lessons in Safe-T-Opolis. (For instance, did you know most overhead power lines are not insulated?) Presentations generally last about 30-45 minutes, depending on the questions asked, and can be tailored to individual audiences:

  • Fourth Graders and Older
Safe-T-Opolis meets Alabama Course of Study, Stanford 10 Achievement Test, National Science Education Standards for fourth grade. Presentations can be tailored for classes above 4th grade, too, but due to the frank presentation of electrical shocks, we don't recommend Safe-T-Opolis for students younger than fourth grade.

  • First Responders
First responders are typically at the scene of an accident when conditions are most disorganized and can be very susceptible to electrical hazards. We present Safe-T-Opolis to first responders, such as police officers, firefighters (including volunteer firefighters) and paramedics.

  • Construction Crews
We present safety information to construction crews, crane operators, painters, and others that work in close proximity to power lines.

How to Request Safe-T-Opolis
Safe-T-Opolis is a free public service presented by trained Alabama Power employees who can be scheduled to visit your location.
