We provide several programs for customers with special needs, including alternate payment dates for people who rely on monthly government checks. We also offer Braille and large-print bills as well as telecommunications services for the deaf.
Discounts are available for customers receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid for Low Income Families (MLIF). The discount includes $14.50 toward the customer charge and exemption from paying certain state utility license tax fees.
A program in partnership with the Salvation Army, Project SHARE helps pay the energy bills of low-income Alabamians, who are age 60 or older and/or disabled, if funds are available. You can apply for assistance from Project SHARE at your local Salvation Army office or by calling 205-328-2420. Or you can choose to help your neighbors by making a monthly donation via your Alabama Power account.
Our stockholders created the Alabama Business Charitable Trust in 1992. The Trust is a social welfare organization that provides energy assistance to low-income households. It operates at a higher income guideline than most federal programs, which offers an opportunity for those who cannot receive federal dollars to apply. The Trust partners with community action agencies (listed at the bottom of this page) and other nonprofits to help cover the cost of energy bills for families facing financial hardship. If you’re interested in ABC Trust programs, you can contact the community action agency in your county.
The Energy Assistance portal is a tool that is free for agencies and churches, as well as public and private charitable organizations, to use while assisting Alabama Power customers with their energy costs.
