How to Save Money Using Time Advantage – Energy in Summer Months

For the Summer Months of June, July, August, September:

To save money during the summer months, you will want to shift energy use to economy pricing periods (7 p.m. to 1 p.m.) where the price for electricity is 5.5196 cents per kWh.  This means you will want to decrease energy usage during the weekday peak hours in the afternoons from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The peak price during these hours is 25.5196 cents per kWh. Minimize your electricity use during this time and save money by taking advantage of the economy pricing periods as much as possible.

Use the six tips below to shift energy usage during the summer months:

  1. Set your programmable thermostat to 78-80 degrees.

  2. Use ceiling fans to cool your home to cut down on your use of the air conditioner when you are home.

  3. Use a timer on your water heater.

  4. Avoid using major appliances like the washing machine, dryer and dishwasher.

  5. Use a timer on your pool pump to turn it off.

  6. Pre-cool your home in the morning before 1pm and use fans during the peak hours.

Even if you are using your electricity at home during the peak periods, you can still save on your bill by utilizing these tips, when you consider energy costs over the entire year. However, you can achieve the most savings by curtailing energy use of the five major appliances in your home during the peak period.
