When students return to Beulah Elementary School in Valley, Alabama, this year, they’ll be welcomed by fragrant wildflowers and fresh vegetables, thanks to a project recently headed by the Beulah Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and volunteers from the Southeast/Farley chapter of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO).
The initiative, which involved revitalizing the school’s garden by constructing new raised garden beds and planting seeds for tomatoes, radishes, carrots, cucumbers and a variety of colorful flowers, aims to enrich the school grounds and promote student education about gardening and healthy eating habits. More than 20 APSO volunteers, Beulah Elementary PTO members and school staff came together to complete the garden project, making this a true community effort.
“This garden project offered an opportunity for APSO volunteers to make a meaningful impact on our community,” said Lisa Roberts, senior customer service representative at Alabama Power and APSO volunteer. “Not only did we plant seeds for flowers and vegetables; we also planted seeds of knowledge that will support Beulah Elementary’s students in their educational journey and promote healthy lifestyle habits. APSO is thrilled to be part of such a meaningful initiative.”

In addition to providing volunteer hours, APSO further supported the project through a $600 contribution, which was used to purchase items from the school’s wish list, including vegetable and flower seeds, stepping stones, weed fabric, topsoil, raised garden soil, fertilizer, weed/ant killer and plant stakes, to further enhance the garden’s aesthetic and nutritious food supply.
Anna Carmichael, Beulah Elementary School visual arts teacher, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration and the importance of the garden for the school and students.
“We are thrilled about our partnership with APSO to revitalize our school garden just in time for the students’ arrival next week,” Carmichael said. “This collaboration not only enhances the look of our campus but also significantly contributes to the growth of our environmental program.”
This initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit, promising to leave a lasting impact on Beulah Elementary School and its students for years to come.
