Alabama Shakespeare Festival presents ‘The Wizard of Oz’

Based on the classic children’s book by L. Frank Baum, “The Wizard of Oz” tells the story of Dorothy, a young girl dreaming of adventure far away from her family farm, whose life suddenly changes when a tornado whisks her off to the magical land of Oz. The fun-filled musical for all ages features the score made famous by the 1939 MGM film. The production is underway through Sunday, Aug. 17. Sidewalk Film Festival

Save the date for the 27th annual Sidewalk Film Festival slated for Aug. 18-24 in Birmingham’s historic theater district. The film fest is offering screenings of more than 200 films, filmmaker Q&As, panels, workshops, networking events and parties. Venues include the Alabama School of Fine Arts, Alabama Theatre, Birmingham Museum of Art, Carver Theatre, First Church Birmingham, Lyric Theatre and Sidewalk Cinema. Red Mountain Theatre presents ‘Waitress’

Inspired by Adrienne Shelly’s beloved film, the Tony-nominated musical “Waitress” offers a special recipe for finding happiness in unexpected places. Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker, is stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. Faced with an unexpected pregnancy, Jenna fears she may have to abandon the dream of opening her own pie shop … until a baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s handsome new doctor offer her a tempting recipe for happiness. Birmingham Museum of Art

The Birmingham Museum of Art presents “Silver & Ceremony from Southern Asia, 1830-1930,” an exhibition featuring the collection of Harish K. Patel. The exhibition includes more than 150 suites of silver and explores how silver served as both a decorative art and a catalyst for cultural transformation during a period of rapid global change. The exhibition is on view through Sunday, Nov. 30.

Magic City Expo

The Magic City Expo (MCE) will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. Drive Electric Alabama

Members of the Bay Area Chapter of Drive Electric Alabama will display electric vehicles (EVs) Saturday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Greer’s Market in Mobile. The event offers information about EV makes and models, technology, range and affordability. Gain firsthand knowledge about EVs by interacting directly with owners in one-on-one sessions. EV owners who are Alabama Power customers can access other savings, including a discounted rate on all electricity during overnight hours and a $500 rebate for the installation of an in-home charger. Renew Our Rivers

Take part in a Renew Our Rivers (ROR) cleanup Saturday, Aug. 9, along Valley Creek in Fairfield, Midfield, Hueytown, Pleasant Grove and Brighton. ROR is a national-award-winning campaign originated by Alabama Power in 2000. Since its start, more than 134,000 volunteers have removed more than 8,450 tons of trash and debris from rivers, lakes and creeks across four Southeastern states.
