James Spann: Another cold front arrives in Alabama Friday night; cold weekend ahead

SUNNY, BREEZY, COLD THURSDAY: We have a cloudless sky across Alabama this afternoon with temperatures ranging from the mid 30s across the Tennessee Valley to the upper 40s across far South Alabama. Tonight will be clear and cold with a low between 25 and 35 degrees.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Temperatures warm into the 50s tomorrow with an increasingly cloudy sky. Another cold front will pass through tomorrow night with some light rain … a few flurries are possible in the colder air during the pre-dawn hours Saturday morning over North Alabama. We expect no accumulation or impact.

Saturday will be dry and a bit colder … with a partly sunny sky; highs will be mostly in the 40s and 50s. Sunday will be much colder with North Alabama communities remaining in the 30s all day.

SNOW? Global models hint at a wave of low pressure forming along the Arctic front in the Northeast Gulf; this could bring some light rain to the far southern counties of the state Sunday morning. The air could be cold enough for some light snow or flurries across the southeast corner of the state around Dothan/Ozark/Geneva/Headland/Enterprise, but the reliable European global model keeps the deeper moisture to the south, suggesting any accumulation would be light, and any impact would be very limited.

The American GFS model remains an outlier, suggesting some potential for more meaningful snow accumulation across Southeast Alabama, but it is trending toward the drier EC model solution. Of course, we will watch model trends closely and make adjustments as needed.

NEXT WEEK: The first half of the week will be cold and dry with lows well below freezing Monday and Tuesday morning; colder spots over North Alabama could reach the upper teens. Then, expect a warming trend Wednesday through Friday with highs back in the 50s and 60s by the end of the week. Some rain is possible by Thursday or Friday … See the video briefing for maps, graphics and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1967: The Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10, in Super Bowl I at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. From the weather station at the USC campus in downtown LA, the high temperature was 79 degrees, and the low was 51. There was a light west wind.
