James Spann: Breezy, much colder today in Alabama; another front arrives Friday night

COLD: Today will be a mostly sunny, breezy, and much colder day for Alabama with highs this afternoon ranging from the mid 30s across the Tennessee Valley to the mid 40s near the coast. An icy north wind will make it feel colder. The sky will stay mostly clear tonight, and by daybreak tomorrow most places will drop into the 20s.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Temperatures warm into the 50s tomorrow with an increasingly cloudy sky. Another cold front will pass through tomorrow night with some light rain… a few flurries are possible in the colder air during the pre-dawn hours Saturday morning over North Alabama. We expect no accumulation or impact.

Saturday will be dry and a bit colder… with a partly sunny sky highs will be mostly in the 40s and 50s. Sunday will be much colder with North Alabama communities remaining in the 30s all day.

Global models hint at a wave of low pressure forming along the Arctic front in the Northeast Gulf; this could bring some light rain for the southeast corner of the state Sunday morning. Maybe even a snowflake or two, but again this morning the more reliable European global model shows nothing more than sprinkles or flurries with no impact. The American GFS model remains an outlier, suggesting some potential for snow accumulation across Southeast Alabama, but for now that solution is rejected in our forecast. Of course, we will watch model trends closely and make adjustments as needed.

NEXT WEEK: The first half of the week will be cold and dry with lows well below freezing Monday and Tuesday morning; colder spots over North Alabama could reach the upper teens. Then, expect a warming trend Wednesday through Friday with highs back in the 50s and 60s by the end of the week. Some rain is possible by Friday or Friday night… See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.
