James Spann: Hot, humid weather for Alabama, with an afternoon storm in spots

SUMMER WEATHER: We are looking at some pretty routine summer weather for Alabama and the Deep South this week — partly sunny, hot, humid days with the risk of a passing afternoon or evening shower or thunderstorm. Afternoon storms today will be very isolated; the chance of any one spot getting one is 15-25%.

Odds will increase daily for the rest of the week as the air becomes more unstable, to 40-50% Tuesday through Friday. Most of the storms will come from about 1 until 10 p.m. Expect highs in the low to mid 90s today and Tuesday, followed by upper 80s and low 90s over the latter half of the week.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The routine summer pattern continues with partly sunny days, highs around 90 degrees and random, scattered afternoon and evening storms. This pattern will likely persist into next week.

TROPICS: Over the weekend, short-lived Tropical Storm Chantal moved into the Carolinas; it is now dissipating inland. The rest of the Atlantic basin remains very calm; no tropical storms or hurricanes are expected for at least the next seven days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1905: The mercury soared to 127 degrees at Parker, Arizona, to tie the state record established at Fort Mohave on June 15, 1896. The current record for Arizona is 128 degrees, set in Lake Havasu City on June 29, 1994.

ON THIS DATE IN 2021: Tropical Storm Elsa made landfall near Fish Creek, Florida, with winds of 65 mph. Thirteen deaths were associated with Elsa — nine in the Florida Straits, two in the Dominican Republic, one in Martinique and one in the United States.
