Bishop State Community College in Mobile is now accepting applications for its Transmission Lineworker Program, which is slated to begin classes in April 2026. The classes will be held on-site at the Bishop State Southwest Campus.
Transmission lineworkers provide support in the construction and maintenance of transmission lines and substation facilities. The job requires the ability to work at heights up to 200 feet, and transmission lineworkers constantly travel around the state to an assigned construction site until that project is complete.
The Transmission Lineworker Program consists of 10 weeks of classes, Monday-Friday as needed during daytime hours, and takes up approximately 40-50 hours per week. The program teaches students the fundamentals of electricity alongside the necessary math and sciences to work on power lines.
In addition to work inside the classroom, students also receive hands-on experience by practicing in an outdoor learning laboratory — developing skills so that they are ready for a career upon graduation. Following graduation from the course, students will have the opportunity to interview with various utility providers.
The cost of the course is approximately $4,000 for tuition, and financial assistance may be available via scholarships and WIOA funding for qualified applicants.
Applicants must be a minimum age of 18 at the time of application submission and must have a high school diploma or GED along with meeting Bishop State’s required minimum score on the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) or other education attainment standard set by the institution. Other qualifications include the successful completion of a drug screen, an interview with the school, completion of a pole climbing exercise and completion of initial paperwork for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
