This Alabama Power unsung hero’s heart is in the community serving others

Alabama Power Information Systems Analyst Ronald Crenshaw is serving on a big stage – The World Games, the largest sporting event in Birmingham since the 1996 Olympics.

Crenshaw is on temporary assignment as the assistant to the Unified Command Logistics chief for the Games. Crenshaw works to coordinate local, state and federal partners. Safety is key to ensuring the Games are successful and fun.

“Ron is passionate about leading this company forward with technology and working with people across departmental and company lines to make things happen,” said Power Delivery Technology Support Manager Chris McClain. “His passion carries over into his community, not just ‘giving back’ as is so often said of people, but to actually lead efforts to meet immediate needs and bring long-term, impactful opportunities to our city and local communities.”

The logistics team is working behind the scenes so fans can have the safest and easiest experience while enjoying the Games July 7-17. The competition will bring about 3,600 athletes from around the globe to the Magic City to compete in 34 sports in venues scattered across the Birmingham area.

Crenshaw’s position in the company supports the Job Estimate Training System app, and he is a data analytics liaison to internal and external customers. He became interested in this field through SimCity, an open-ended city-building video game.

Crenshaw is a board member of Promoting Empowerment and Enrichment Resources Inc., a nonprofit in east Birmingham that focuses on promoting health, education and economic development to community stakeholders.

“My heart is in the community serving others,” Crenshaw said. “Through PEER Inc., our current projects include a seasonal farmers market, annual health fair, after-school enrichment program for third and fourth graders focusing on nutrition, cooking classes, free hot meals for seniors and senior exercise classes.”

Crenshaw also is a commissioner on the Birmingham Planning Commission and the Zoning Advisory Committee. He previously was vice president of the South East Lake Neighborhood Association, vice president of the Roebuck-South East Lake Community and a member of Young Professionals of Birmingham.

Crenshaw participates in initiatives with the Alabama Power Service Organization Magic City Chapter. One of his favorite events is Habitat for Humanity’s Grill to Build BBQ Competition & Festival, where he’s been a judge for many years. Crenshaw participated in the Neighborhoods USA conference for many years as a representative of Birmingham. He’s participated in conferences in Omaha, Nebraska; Memphis, Tennessee; Palm Springs, California; and was a tour guide during the Neighborhoods USA conference in Birmingham. Crenshaw has dressed as Santa Claus at Christmas for children in the community.

“Ron is tireless and always has a smile on his face. His laugh is contagious and he brings joy everywhere he goes,” McClain said. “Just being around Ron makes you want to be a better person and help serve selflessly, just as he does.
