Dozens of volunteers with the Magic City Chapter of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) packed more than 1,000 relief bags for communities hit hard by Hurricane Isaias.
The volunteers spent their lunch time on Tuesday filling the sealable bags with a variety of shelf-stable foods such as peanut butter crackers, beef jerky bites or canned chicken, trail mix, breakfast bars, fruit cups and tissues.
The bags were sent to communities still trying to recover from the impact of Hurricane Isaias, which slammed into the Gulf coast as a Category 2 hurricane. Strong winds continued inland to much of Alabama, knocking down trees and powerlines.

The extensive amount of fallen trees and damage to electrical infrastructure made restoration work difficult in some areas of the state, including hard-hit communities like Brewton, East Brewton, Castleberry and Beatrice. That’s where the relief bags went along with six pallets of water.
“Hurricane Isaias brought devastation to several communities throughout southwest Alabama,” said Mike Jordan, vice president of Alabama Power’s Mobile Division. “The Power Delivery and support teams have again done an incredible job in working around the clock to restore power and bring a sense of normalcy to families. The Alabama Power work, however, does not stop when the lights come on. Our commitment extends to helping people meet emergency needs and support for our communities. Thank you to Magic City APSO for assembling care kits to be distributed to those in need. Even from almost 200 miles away, our company rallies to support one another and our communities. Thank you!”
