Join Us for the Annual Dam Ride!

What is The Dam Ride?

The Dam Ride is a 90-mile cycling event that starts at 9:00 a.m. outside Alabama Power Corporate Headquarters in downtown Birmingham. The ride finishes at Lay Dam in Chilton County. It's organized by Power Pedalers, a group that supports youth cycling in Alabama. Started by a group of Alabama Power employees about 20 years ago, today, Alabama Power is a proud sponsor of this event.

Why Join the Ride?

Lloyd Maisonville, president of the Birmingham Bicycle Club, loves The Dam Ride. He says: “I’ve had the opportunity to participate in The Dam Ride several times over the past few years. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to ride with the group, taking in the roads and scenery of the counties we ride through.”

Eric Riddle, another cycling fan, has participated five times since 2018. “Every year, The Dam Ride never disappoints,” he says. “With outstanding police support throughout the 90-mile journey, coupled with a nice lunch and fabulous dinner at Alabama Power’s Lay Dam, the terrain is very scenic along the route, especially toward the end of the ride as you approach Lay Lake.”

What to Expect

  • Safety First: A support vehicle will follow the group and meet them at several points along the ride.
  • Lunch and Dinner: Enjoy a lunch stop at the perfect time and place, and a dinner with a view at Lay Dam.
  • Scenic Route: Ride through beautiful Shelby County and arrive at the picturesque Lay Dam.
