The landscape of technology is ever changing. From software to mobile devices to vehicle technology, innovation is everywhere.
Automotive technicians these days are no different than members of any other workforce when it comes to keeping up with evolving technologies.
Alabama Power’s Fleet Services organization is responsible for ensuring that all company vehicles and equipment are safe, in good working order, and in compliance with company guidelines and state and federal laws. Their role is vital to the company’s ability to provide reliable service to customers.
“This is a growing field, and every day something’s changing,” said Alabama Power Fleet Supervisor Barry Johnson. “As we’re evolving, electric vehicles are big on the horizon and other alternative fuel vehicles are coming. Somebody’s got to take care of this equipment. Somebody’s got to know how to work on it.”
In 2001, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence designated June as Automotive Service Professionals Month. It is a time to recognize automotive service professionals who are proficient, credentialed and committed to excellence.
“I am so proud of all the employees that make up the Fleet Services team,” said Alabama Power Fleet Services Manager Jeff Martin. “Our No. 1 goal is Safety First and our employees work every day toward that goal. I am proud to recognize our Alabama Power Fleet Services employees as automotive service professionals and I am honored to be a part of this team.”
Martin said providing excellent customer service is integral to Fleet Services’ role. His team of professionals works with Alabama Power employees in groups like Power Delivery and Transmission to ensure vehicles used in helping customers with power outages are working and reliable.
“As a fleet employee, we’re here to support the line crew, to make everything work for them and to keep their trucks DOT-compliant so we can continue to provide power to our customers in a timely manner,” said Cy Moore, utility fleet subforeman.
Fleet Services employees are also a major part of the company’s mutual assistance efforts when other states are hit hard by storms.
In 2017, after Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, the company was tasked with sending equipment and personnel to assist with restoration.
“We were trying to find people who had taken vacations, and we had to be at the port in Mobile just a couple of days after Christmas with all of the equipment,” said Fleet Services General Clerk Amy Argo. “It was a very challenging time. We were going through training records and making sure everyone was trained on the equipment. It was a big puzzle, but I was proud to be a small part of it.”
As the saying goes, “many hands make light work” and at Alabama Power, many departments work together to keep the lights on for customers. The company is committed to providing industry-leading service to power Alabama homes and businesses.
