Alabama Power’s Plant Barry was recently honored for outstanding operations by Guidehouse Generation Knowledge Service (GKS).
The GKS Plant Operational Excellence Awards recognize power plants that have demonstrated excellence in cost and operational management, as well as improved performance and reliability. Top safety performance was also factored into the analysis. The award was based on performance data from 2016 to 2020.
Plant Barry, located in Bucks near Mobile, was the runner-up in the combined cycle plants division. PacifiCorp’s Chehalis Power Station in Washington was named the top performer.
“Every day our team is committed to safely providing our customers the high level of service they expect and deserve,” said Barry Plant Manager Nik Budney. “We appreciate Guidehouse GKS’s recognition of our excellence.”
Winners were selected after a detailed analysis of cost and performance data from Guidehouse’s industry-leading GKS database, which contains data on more than 230,000 megawatts (MW) of coal-fired generation and nearly 90,000 MW of combined cycle generation.
Duke Energy’s Cayuga Generating Station in Indiana and PacifiCorp’s Hunter Power Station in Utah took the top spots in the coal plant division.
“We are pleased to recognize PacifiCorp, Duke and Southern Company, the owners and operators of these high-performing plants, as industry leaders in today’s increasingly competitive environment,” said Bruce Hamilton, director of Generation Services at Guidehouse. “In addition to the need for reliability and low cost, the new dimension of flexibility required in a market with larger amounts of variable generation tests the ingenuity of plant operators.”
