Stay Cool and Save: Energy Tips for Renters This Summer

When Alabama temperatures rise, so can your energy use. The good news? With rates frozen through 2027, you can track your usage to stay in check and keep bills more consistent month to month. And you don’t need to own your home to make a difference. These simple, renter-friendly tips can help you stay comfortable and keep costs in check all summer long.

1. Adjust Your Thermostat (Just a Little)

Set your thermostat a few degrees higher when you’re away and use ceiling fans to stay comfortable when you’re home. Fans help you feel cooler – but remember to turn them off when you leave the room.

Humidity is also a factor that can affect how hard your AC unit has to work during an Alabama summer. If necessary, try using a dehumidifier to keep within the optimal range of 30-50% humidity within your home.

2. Block the Heat Before It Gets In

Close blinds or curtains during the hottest parts of the day, especially on sun-facing windows. Blackout curtains or thermal shades can make an even bigger impact and are an easy, renter-friendly way to keep your space cooler.

3. Skip the Extra Heat Indoors

Ovens, dryers and even some light bulbs can warm up your space fast. Try grilling outside, air-drying clothes or switching to LED bulbs to keep things cooler inside.

4. Check Your Air Filter

If it’s accessible, ask your landlord about replacing your air filter regularly. A clean filter helps your system run more efficiently and keeps cool air flowing.

5. Seal Small Gaps (Without Permanent Changes)

Use removable weatherstripping or draft stoppers around doors and windows to keep cool air in and hot air out – no tools or long-term commitment required.

6. Use Smart Power Habits

Electronics and chargers still use energy when plugged in. Unplug what you’re not using or use a power strip to easily turn things off.

7. Take Advantage of What You Can Control

You may not be able to upgrade your HVAC system, but you can control how you use energy day to day. Our free and easy-to-use tools like My Power Usage and Home Energy Reports can help you track your usage and spot simple ways to save at home. Plus, download our Alabama Power app to have access to your account anytime, anywhere.

8. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

Not sure what’s allowed? Ask your landlord about small improvements like installing a smart thermostat, adding weatherstripping or upgrading bulbs. Some may be open to it, especially if it improves efficiency.

With just a few small changes, renters can stay cool, comfortable and in control, even during the hottest Alabama days. Learn more about how you can save all season long at alabamapower.com/summer.
