How We Prep Our System for Cold Weather

When cold weather shows up in Alabama, it never sneaks up on us. We spend months getting ready, long before the first chilly morning, so when winter really settles in, you can count on your power to stay steady.

Before the cold hits: our pre-season prep

All of our winter prep is wrapped up by November, which gives us plenty of time to get the system ready before temperatures dip. This early work is all about strengthening the backbone of our grid:

  • We inspect critical equipment from top to bottom. That includes substations, battery systems, transformers, control cabinets and generating plant switchyards.
  • We stock up on essential supplies so our teams have everything they need on hand.
  • Pipes are insulated, heaters and heat lamps are staged and ready, and freeze-protection systems and heat tracing are checked and installed where needed.

Think of it as giving the whole system a winter coat before the cold arrives.

When winter weather is on the way

Once a winter storm is in the forecast, we shift into in-season prep. This stage is all about readiness and response.

  • We stage fuel, temporary structures and additional support crews so we can move quickly if conditions worsen.
  • Plants operate 24/7, 365 days a year – so there are always employees onsite, even in the middle of the night during the coldest conditions.
  • When temperatures drop below 20–25°F, we increase staffing at key facilities to keep everything running smoothly and handle any issues immediately.

And behind all of this prep are teams who brave freezing temperatures, icy roads and tough weather so you don’t have to think twice about keeping the lights on or staying warm.

Why it matters

Winter weather can be unpredictable, but our approach isn’t. By planning ahead, maintaining equipment year-round and showing up around the clock during extreme cold, we’re committed to delivering the reliable energy you depend on – no matter what the forecast brings.

As our crews tackle an Alabama winter, it’s also a great time for you to prep at home: check your thermostat settings and seal any drafty windows to stay cozy and save energy. Find more tips and helpful resources for the colder months at alabamapower.com/winter.
