How to Get Your Storm Kit Winter-Ready

Winter weather in Alabama can be unpredictable. A mild week can quickly give way to freezing temperatures, and ice, wind and severe weather can lead to unexpected power outages.

Before the temperature drops, take a few minutes to make sure you’re ready, both at home and on the road.

Start with your at-home storm kit

Keep your storm kit in an easy-to-find place and make sure it includes:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Bottled water and nonperishable food
  • A first-aid kit and necessary medications
  • A battery-powered radio
  • Fully charged portable phone chargers
  • Extra blankets
  • Warm layers, hats and gloves
  • Hand warmers
  • Supplies for babies, older family members and pets

It’s also a good time to locate your home’s main water shutoff and make sure exposed pipes are protected when freezing temperatures are expected.

Get your car ready, too

Icy roads and freezing temperatures can make winter travel especially challenging in Alabama. Keep a small emergency kit in your vehicle with:

  • Bottled water and nonperishable snacks
  • A flashlight and extra batteries
  • A blanket or extra warm clothing
  • A portable phone charger
  • A first-aid kit
  • Jumper cables
  • An ice scraper
  • Basic roadside emergency supplies

When winter weather is in the forecast, keep your gas tank filled or your electric vehicle charged and avoid unnecessary travel when road conditions are dangerous.

A little preparation goes a long way

Before the next cold snap arrives, check your supplies, replace anything that’s expired and make sure your home and vehicle are ready.

And remember: Never use grills, generators or other fuel-burning equipment inside your home or garage. Portable generators should always be operated outdoors and away from doors and windows.
